Birmingham

This past Friday, I took the dogs to the kennel, packed all our bags, loaded Garrison in the Land Rover and picked up Will for a surprise overnight trip to Birmingham.  It was the first weekend in 16 weeks that we haven't had something scheduled, and we needed to get out of town as a family!  Once Will got over the shock of not going to Anthony's for dinner (that's what he thought the surprise was), we headed out of town.  We took our time getting to Birmingham.  We ate dinner in Tuscaloosa, and of course got Starbucks.  So by the time we got to Birmingham, it was G's bed time.  Sweet boy slept in the big bed with Mommy and Daddy!

I made hotel reservations at Ross Bridge, and the pool was awesome.  Garrison loved the "splash pad" part of it, but not the rest of it!  He didn't go in the water past his ankles.  And for as much as he loves the slide at the park, he refused to go down the slide into the pool!  Maybe one day he will!

We played in the pool Saturday morning, and then ran a few errands.  We ate pizza for lunch, went to a super cool toy store in Homewood, and went to a couple of running stores.  It was wonderful!

Garrison....at Tim's wedding

Tim and Stephanie

I posted this on my work blog yesterday....

My brother got married June 30.  I didn't know I'd cry.  Oh, who am I kidding?  I knew I'd cry....just not THAT much.  I lost it when Stephanie walked down the aisle.  Her dad escorted her, and then her two sons met them half way down the aisle to escort her the rest of the way to Tim.  It was emotional, and sweet, and such a celebration of their love for each other.  I was a blabbering mess at the rehearsal dinner.  All I remember saying was how happy Tim has been while he's been dating her.

There was so much else I wanted to say - like how compassionate and caring and giving he is.  I wanted to tell the story about how Tim prayed for Garrison while he was in the NICU.  No matter what time of night it was, when we would visit with G in the NICU, Tim always wanted me to send him a picture.  He said he couldn't be there to pray over Garrison in person, but he could touch the computer screen and pray for him.  But I couldn't get any of that out that night.

So, Tim and Steph, I'll say it now.  I love you guys.  And I love your three sons.  You are both strong in your faith and beliefs, and that is contagious.  Tim, I know you love Jon and Micah just as much as you love Hayden.  And Stephanie, I know you love Hayden just as much as you love Micah and Jon.  Will and I were honored and blessed to be a part of your wedding day, and more importantly your lives.  We love you.

I love this picture because Tim is thinking, "Come on, Will....how many more pages do you have to go?  I wanted the ceremony to be short!!"

1st week of school at St. Paul's

I should just go ahead and write a disclaimer about this post....it's going to be long and detailed.  But I don't want to forget the little things that happened this week.

This was Garrison's first week at St. Paul's Episcopal Day School.  One day a few weeks ago Will and I started talking about him needing a more structured program.  Someone recommended St. Paul's, we went to visit, and signed him up.  It all happened that fast!  But we really felt comfortable sending him there (and we know he doesn't have to stay ALL day EVERY day).

So this weekend we really talked up his NEW school.  Sunday afternoon we drove to it and pulled into the parking lot.  We were trying to talk Garrison into being excited!

All Monday morning we talked about going to his NEW school.  We packed his backpack and headed to school.  Will and I both took him, and we got there about 8:45.  Well, all the other kids were there already!  When we opened the door to his classroom, they all ran up to him.  Kids that age are funny.  They don't really interact a lot with each other, but they like to stare!  They are just curious and soaking it all in.  Well all the kids really overwhelmed G, and he started backing up into Will's legs.  His teacher came over and took his hand, all the while we are pushing him into the classroom!  He turned around and looked at us with big crocodile tears!  Whew.  I wanted to run in and get him and take him home with me!!!  We had to talk to Ms. Susie, the director for a minute, and when we walked back by his classroom, his teacher was holding him!  I'm sure he loved that!

I picked him up from school on Monday.  When I pulled into the parking lot, I saw his class on the playground.  He was playing in the rocks by himself.  It made me sad because I want him to have friends.

Every morning I have been praying with him on the way to school.  We name the kids in his class (that I know), and I pray that he makes friends.  I also pray that he keeps his sweet spirit and tender heart and doesn't pick up bad habits from other kids!  Even at age 2 we want him to be a light that shines!

Tuesday morning was a little easier.  When I dropped him off (Will didn't go), he cried just a little, but not very much.  His morning teacher is Ms. Anita.  And she is wonderful.  We really are blessed to have her as his teacher.  She told us that one year she potty trained 13 kids in her classroom!

When I picked him up Tuesday, his afternoon teacher (Mrs. Wilda) said that he had been more talkative and had played with his friends more!!

Tuesday night we had a parent/teacher conference.  Everyone met at the beginning, and each teacher stood up to introduce themselves.  When Ms. Anita stood up, Garrison yelled from across the room, "Nita!!"  It was precious.  She laughed and told us that when he wakes up from his nap he calls for her!  I just thought it was awesome that after only two days he would call her name in a room full of people!  It showed me that he loves her already!

This morning when I pulled into the parking lot, I said, "Look Garrison, we are at school" And he responded, "NEW."  He was still hesitant to walk into his classroom, but there were no tears.....from him or me!!  Although by about 9:15 I wanted to go check him out!

Will picked him up this afternoon.  He wanted to pick him up early because he had to go to Starkville for practice.  He knew if he didn't get him from school, that he wouldn't see him today.  Ms. Wilda and Ms. Susie both told him that this morning some of the boys in his classroom were being bad (thank goodness it wasn't G!).  They had to get on to them, and it upset Garrison.  They don't know if it scared him or if he was upset because they were getting in trouble.  But they said it took a long time to console him and for him to calm down.  I just love his tender heart and don't want it to get trampled on.  Whew....my protective Mama side is coming out!!  Don't mess with my baby!

sunglasses and school

Garrison has really been wanting to wear his sunglasses a lot lately.  He will see them in the cupholder of the door and want to put them on.  I'm happy about it....it protects his eyes.  This picture was this morning on the way to school  He wasn't smiling like this when I took him to his classroom.  (I can't think about it very much or I'll cry and want to go get him from school.  But I know he will be ok).

Thawed Out Day

Today is Garrison's "thawed out" day!  Will told him this morning that three years ago he was frozen.  I'm not sure he really understood what that meant, but I know one day he will!  He is such a joy and blessing to our lives.

Sweet Garrison,

You are such a blessing to us.  Your smile lights up a room.  You love to sing and play guitar and drums.  Your favorite songs are Wheels on the Bus, the ABCs, Jesus Loves Me, and You Are My Sunshine.  You love to play daddy's guitar while he sings.  I think God will one day use music in your life.

Today is the day you were "thawed out".  Mommy and Daddy tried for a long time to get pregnant, but God knew exactly when we needed you.  I can't imagine life without you.  Please know that we always love you and that Mommy and Daddy will always love each other.

So today, even though it's not your birthday, we celebrate life.  Your life.

I will always love you.
